What was a local community self sufficeint militarily and economically in the early Middle Ages?

AND B. Why was it important to self-sufficiency at this age? I explain these SEPARATELY. They are two separate issues. Thanks in advance:)

A. Local communities are economically self-sufficient, because most communities do not have a feudal economy outside agriculture. Each family would have a certain amount of farm land. In addition, large landowners nobles to delegate sections of land to knights in return for military protection. The families were under the so-called gentlemen and servants. B. self-sufficiency was important in the past due to the constant threat of invaders like the Vikings and moors. Every community needs to be able to defend itself to protect against these invaders
